On Wednesday, October 2, 2019, the 2nd edition of ‘Ghana Reads!’ will be held to commemorate the 2019 International Reading Day.

The event, a Festival of Reading, is organised by Ghana Reads Initiative and e-Ananse Libraries and is set to take place at the Accra City Hall (within the New AMA Complex) near Kinbu SHS from 10am. The theme for this year’s edition remains “To inform the Blackman, put it in a book” and is run with the slogan, ‘Making Reading Fun, Making Reading Our Culture; Ghana, Let’s Read!’.

Ghana Reads! is a community based reading campaign geared at encouraging Ghanaians, especially children & youth, to love reading fiction literature; promoting the reading of Ghanaian fiction literature; bridging the gap between readers and authors/publishers and teaching the skills & importance of reading. It is designed to involve every individual or institution in Ghana and beyond. By this, individuals and institutions are encouraged to be part of the project by purchasing selected Fiction Literature by a Ghanaian author for libraries in Chorkor, Jamestown, Osu, Kawukudi and Korle Gonno.

According to the organisers, the event would host renowned musicians, actors, political and societal leaders, sportsmen, journalists, radio/tv presenters including Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie (former Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts & Culture), Naana Kabukwuor Dumaaley I (Paramount Queen of Ada Traditional Area), Kwaku Elliot (Actor & Life Coach), Valerie Danso (Broadcast Journalist with GBC News), Apiorkor Seiyram Ashong (Poet/Spoken word artiste and Journalist with Citi Tv), Abdul Hayi-Moomen (Broadcast Journalist with GBC News), Blakk Rasta (Musician & Radio Presenter with Zylofon Fm), Anastasia Baddoo (Newscaster with Adoa Tv) among others to read with children from targeted communities (inner cities and Zongos).

The 2019 edition of ‘Ghana Reads!’ is set to feature a conversation on how to make reading a cultural practice in Ghana, explore different reading forms such as Read Aloud, Dramatic Reading, Read & Play, Read & Colour, Voices & Acts, Read Chain among others. It would also host Books Exhibition and Sales, Reading clinics/workshops and Reading Competitions.

One interesting package this edition comes with is the unveiling of e-Ananse Library and an Amphi-Theatre at the new AMA Complex—Accra City Hall.

Hon. Mohammed Adjei Sowah (Mayor of Accra) is the Chairman of this year’s edition while Mrs. Matilda Amissah Arthur (former 2nd Lady of the Republic of Ghana) is the Special Guest of Honour. The Keynote address will be delivered by Nana Kwasi Gyan Apenteng.
