Ace Ghanaian sports journalist, Juliet Bawuah has called for African women in sports to assume front-row presence; to challenge current norms about the African woman being back-burnered.

She echoed this sentiment at the maiden Africa Women’s Sports Summit, which she is convener of.

Currently ongoing at the Botsio Hall of the Swiss Spirit Alisa Hotel in Accra, the summit will also have as speakers SuperSport and Premier League TV’s Carol Tshabalala, Uganda’s Usher Komugisha, GH One TV’s Nana Aba Anamoah, as well as seasoned Ghanaian lawyer and Sports Journalist, Eva Okyere.

Bawuah, a respected name in sports journalism in Ghana, having worked for a range of top Ghanaian media houses, including Citi FM and TV3, as well as international broadcaster Africanews and has corresponded for Goal.com and TRT World,  stressed the need for a “change in narrative” as a matter of urgency.

“Whether it is the Nations Cup or the Women’s World Cup, the African woman in sports must be seen leading the conversation. It should no longer be said that the African woman in sports is relegated to the background. It should also no longer be said that we got opportunities and did nothing with them.

“The change starts now. In our immediate environments, we must be prepared to be agents of this necessary change; we must push for it even if it comes at a cost,” she said.

This year, the conference runs under the theme “Take Your Place”, “highlighting conversations about empowering young female sports journalists and upcoming talents to lead and impact their communities,” per an official press release.

The 2019 #AWSportsSummit is supported by Swiss Spirit Alisa Hotel, Kenya Airways, Expert Travel, Dr. Bates Solutions and Stimuluz.
