Nominations for the prestigious Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards have been announced, and for the first time since 2010, Ghana-based artists are absent in the Best International Act category.

Usual Ghanaian candidates; Stonebwoy and Sarkodie, who were highly anticipated to make an appearance, failed to do so, in something with many deem a big blow to the industry here.

This year sees the merger of Best International Act: Africa & UK, and that crown is contested by Davido, Tiwa Savage, Booba, Dadju, Distruction Boys, Fally Ipupa, J Hus, Steflon Don, and Niska. Indeed, Ghana’s only real association with the category would be the nomination of Gryme act, Stormzy, who, though is a UK artist, bears Ghanaian ancestry.

R2Bees, Kojo Antwi, Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, MzVee, and D- Black constitute Ghana’s BET International Act honourees in the last six years.

Hiphop mogul, DJ Khaled leads this year’s nominations with 6. Other big nominees include Migos and SZA, who earned 4 nominations each. Bruno Mars, Drake, Beyonce, JAY-Z, Cardi B and Chris Brown are also nominated for cardinal awards.
