Ghanaian youth encouraged to apply technology to solve local problems

Leading tech talent accelerator Sleekjob Academy, organised a landmark hackathon for students of Ghana Technology University College in Accra as part of the institution’s annual Innovation and Entrepreneurship Week Celebration.

The event which came off a few weeks ago, attracted several students of the Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Networking departments. The four- hour gruelling competition saw participants tackle real life problems in groups, employing their skills in problem solving and software development.

At the end of the competition, the team consisting Kofi Boahene Name and Crentsil Kwayie emerged winners. Their team developed a smart system which allows students and lecturers to efficiently book lecture halls and venues on campus.

Hackathons are events in which people meet to engage in collaborative computer programming to solve various problems. If regularly organised, hackathons  can help provide local solutions to some of the problems the country faces.

Speaking to ENEWSGH, CEO of Sleekjob Academy expressed excitement at the quality of software solutions as well as the level of creativity displayed by the students on the day. “We were highly impressed with the problem-solving skills of the students and their overall technical ingenuity”, he submitted.

The president of the Engineering Students Association Peter Fletcher also registered his satisfaction with the hackathon: “I am glad the competition was organised on campus, and I look forward to more of such events”, he said.

CCIFG host new year Cocktail Party ( IMAGES )

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry France Ghana (CCIFG) organised a Networking Cocktail at SkyBar 25 to celebrate the beginning of a new year and officially mark the 1st quarter of the Chamber.

The event brought together over 100 participants from the CCIFG network which included CCIFG members, Partners and associates from over 20 sectors in Corporate Ghana as well as France. The event provided a platform for high-level networking among Corporate executives with the objective of creating potential and fruitful partnerships. Beyond the networking advantage, participants were entertained with live-band music accompanied by selected French wine and delicious hors-d’oeuvres.

The Managing Director Mrs Delphine Adenot-Owusu in her speech shared the targets of the CCIFG for the year which are revolved around positioning the Chamber as a promoter of the Ghanaian market to attract business to Ghana, to establish partnerships with our member community and to help boost the Ghanaian economy. She was delighted to highlight the increasing number of trade missions to Ghana which is essential to the Ghanaian economy as well as an avenue for the business opportunity for the Chamber’s local partners. She further mentioned the intention to continue to strengthen the business support arm of the CCIFG to its network as the Chamber plays its role in bridging the gap between France and Ghana.

CCIFG continues to expand its membership base growing to 120. Members in the CCIFG represent various sectors in Corporate Ghana which is a reflection of the dynamic character integrated into the CCIFG.

#JamesonTakeOverGH: Worlasi named for 2018 edition

For the third year running, singer Worlasi has been announced for the annual “Jameson Takeover GH” hangout session.

This year’s edition is slated for the Champs Sports Bar on January 27 from 7 pm, will see the 2017 Coke Studio Africa housemate perform songs off his latest EP Outerlane, as well as his mixtapes Uncut and NUSE.

Via a promo video on the artist’s social media handles, he promises the biggest night so far. Considering his  growing clout over the years, as well as his charismatic stagecraft, a truly memorable night can be expected.

Worlasi is signed to CM Records, and has been associated with esteemed colleagues as Sarkodie, M.anifest,  Da’Hammer, Sena Dagadu among others.

“The Green Experience” With Deon Boakye Slated for African Regent, JANUARY 26!

Budding singer Deon Boakye, will on Friday January 26, stage a live musical performance at the African Regent Hotel in Accra dubbed “The Green Experience”.

Deon’s career has been on the rise since debuting his solo hit single ‘Allewa’ (featuring Cabum). That was followed with other singles like Dubai, New Year and Babiaa Awu.

He will be performing songs off his recent Green album which was outdoored in September last year.

The HardBoy Music Group artiste, noted for his lively and stage craft, will be joined by the World League Band, a unique group that blends multiple genres like highlife, Afrobeats and jazz, as he performs joints off the album as “Ooosh”, “Yellow Sisi” and “Genevieve”.

Speaking in a recent interview regarding the Green LP, Deon explains that the project is “a symbol of fertility, happiness and progress toward attaining your goals.”

The 2017 VGMA unsung nominee since bursting onto the music scene has been consistent and has enjoyed massive coverage in the media for his exceptional vocals and composition of songs which led to his nomination for the unsung category in the VGMA’s.

Consisting 17 tracks, the Green LP features Strongman, Cabum, Medikal, Joel Orleans, Cabum, FlowKing Stone, Akitiwrowro, Kofi Kinaata, Eno, Jason EL-A and a host of others.

According to organizers of the event, ZoneThree6, the Green Experience will be an opportunity for the general public and fans to have a first-time experience with Deon performing live.

Patapaa HEADLINES 3 -Day Concert in Liberia

“One Corner” hitmaker Patapaa Amisty will headline a three-day concert in Liberia from January 19 – January 21.

Put together by Havana Lodge & Executive Inn, the marathon will see the Swedru- native rock the West African nation alongside rapper Stay Jay, and a host of Liberian acts including Soul Fresh, Nuchie Meek, Revoluxon, Eric Geso, and Teddy Ride.

“One Corner” proved to be the biggest song in Ghana in 2017, and hugely influential across the sub-region, earning Patapaa widespread acclaim, and an appearance on many stages in Ghana, and neighbouring Nigeria.

Produced by Morgan Beat, “One Corner” shot to nationwide prominence along with its accompanying dance after Patapaa first performed it at the Akwambo Festival in the Central Region sometime in 2017.

Droves sign up for “Happy FM Dream Wedding”

Happy FM, Ghana’s number one Sports Station continues with its mission of giving back to society. This time, the station will be fulfilling the dreams of many would-be couples to experience an unforgettable all-expense paid wedding ceremony.

The most sort after event dubbed ‘Happy FM Dream Wedding’ slated for February 14 at Cleaver House in Accra, is a continuation of the Happy FM Valentine Mass Wedding event with a more classy touch and feel.

According to Kwasi Sarpong, Programmes Manager of Happy FM, since ‘Dream Wedding’ was launched last year February 14, 2017, a lot of people have been trooping in to sign up.

Couples that signed up for this year’s ‘Dream Wedding’ are currently undergoing counselling sessions from some renowned pastors and marriage counsellors.

“People are extremely excited about the event and even though we closed registration of couples on December 31, 2017, quite a number of people keep coming to us for registration. The Happy FM ‘Dream Wedding’ will take on a new exciting twist which will leave a lasting memory in the minds of the couples, their family members and friends,’’ Kwasi Sarpong stated.

Mr. Sarpong also said that as part of the activities leading to the 14th, the grooms to be will engage in a cooking contest at the forecourt of Happy FM at Asylum Down on Saturday February 10.

He added that Happy FM is committed to helping couples desirous of getting married by taking on the responsibility of organising the classy event and providing all the necessary resources needed.

British Council launches Duapa Challenge “THE CAMPUS DUEL”

The Duapa Challenge is a social innovation support competition providing seed capital and business support for the early-stage viable social enterprise. The programme, as part of our contributions to the social enterprise ecosystem, seeks to promote economic growth, private sector development and youth employment through enterprise.

Over the past two years, the competition achieved its aim in identifying and supporting brilliant social enterprises like Trotro Tractor and CowTribe who are in operation and growing.

The aim of this competition is to:

  • identify and support idea and growth stage social enterprises from tertiary institutions in Ghana.
  • generate and support student entrepreneurship with a focus on social entrepreneurship.
  • bring together idea and growth stage social entrepreneurs to connect, learn and develop synergies.
  • provide seed capital and support to the winning social enterprise from ideation to prototype/market entry phase.
  • create general awareness about social enterprises in Ghana.

CORE TARGET AREAS

This edition of the Duapa Challenge seeks to draw social entrepreneurs in tertiary institutions from the following sectors:

  • Social focused Fintech
  • Green & Renewable Energy
  • Agriculture
  • Ethical Design & Manufacturing
  • Healthcare
  • Education

 

 

THE APPROACH

In this edition dubbed “The Campus Duel”, the competition will focus on student social enterprises in the following 10 Ghanaian tertiary institutions:

  • University of Ghana
  • Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration
  • Ashesi University
  • University of Professional Studies
  • Knutsford University College
  • Lancaster University
  • Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology
  • Central University College
  • University of Cape Coast
  • Catholic University College

Each of these institutions will have a team each of three or fewer students representing them at each stage of the competition. The teams will be required to develop and pitch their business ideas. The winning team will be awarded seed funding for their business, business incubation, training and support by the British Council and social enterprise partners.
