CIMG Telecommunications company of the year, Vodafone Ghana, has led the way in celebrating technological innovation and talent in Ghana with its Appstar Challenge Contest.

The mobile app contest was introduced by the company this year to recognise and reward app developers in the mobile applications industry in the country. The winners are also offered an opportunity to compete internationally with other app developers to showcase the talent inherent in the country.

Four apps were shortlisted for the awards during the grand finale held at the Fiesta Royale Hotel with Vicinity and Africa Legends apps emerging winners in two categories: Start-up and Established apps.

The winners took home cheques of GHS10, 000 each as well as an all-expense paid trip to India to represent Ghana at the Global Appstar competition on15th January, 2015.

Vicinity App is a location and social based application for smartphones. The app helps users to easily navigate for locations around them; taking the stress out of scattered online search engines. The app was developed by Aberdeen Adelu,

Priscilla Hazel and Barnabas Nsoh. Africa’s Legends is a content distribution app for delivering Africa’s Legends content

(games, comics and additional content) to consumers. Africa’s Legends is a superhero series from Leti Arts influenced by folklore and historic legends from across Africa. The App was developed by Leti Games Limited.

The contest was opened for anyone with the capability to develop a cool app in any of the listed platforms – Blackberry, Android, J2ME, Windows Phone, iOS.
