The journey to the 30th edition of the continent’s showpiece football event, the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), concludes in the next few days. Sadly, one of the continent’s most charismatic soldiers will not finish the journey, South Africa’s goalkeeper and captain Senzo Meyiwa.
A nominee for the African Player of the Year based in Africa award, the shot-stopper recently lost his life in tragic circumstances. He will be honoured with a moment of silence at the start of the South Africa vs. Sudan qualifier.
Meyiwa’s charges have vowed to honour him by qualifying for their first Afcon finals in six years. Victory against Sudan at home on the weekend will guarantee them a place at next year’s showpiece with a match to spare.
The match is live on SuperSport 4 and 4HD from 2pm and is one of 17 qualifiers to be broadcast live on the World of Champions on Saturday and Wednesday.
Defending champions Nigeria are in for a fight of their lives just to get an opportunity to defend their title. The Super Eagles are third in Group A and have a tricky encounter against Congo away from home. Failure to win in Pointe-Noire, and a positive result for South Africa, will see them being knocked out and the Red Devils securing qualification.
In Group B, Algeria are home and dry but, it’s still not clear as to who between Mali, Ethiopia and Malawi will qualify alongside them. Mali will end the three-way battle with a win against Malawi on Saturday.
With Cape Verde already through from Group F, 2012 champions Zambia and Mozambique’s encounter in Maputo is a winner-take-all situation.
Ghana will also play Uganda on Saturday the 15th.
