After eight weeks of showing how ordinary Ghanaians are helping in their own small way to effect changes in their respective communities, the first season of the acclaimed MTN Heroes of Change TV series is drawing to a close.
There are people committed to helping their communities in a variety of ways and the programme, an initiative of the MTN Ghana Foundation, aims to highlight the work of such people and eventually support them financially to execute their projects.
Hosted by Kwami Sefa Kayi, the programme that started airing on five stations from Sunday, January 26.
But on Friday, April 4, the Accra International Conference Centre, an invite-only event will climax the show where the ultimate ‘Hero of Change’ will walk away with GH¢50,000 to continue what he or she has started.
Also, an amount of GH¢10,000 will go to support each category winner. The categories include community crusader, social protection, health, environment and education.
A panel of four judges will select winners for each category, as well as an overall winner. The judges who have accepted the challenge of selecting the winners are Sidney Casely Hayford, a chartered accountant as well as business and financial analyst; and Ibrahim Awal, founder and CEO of Marble Communications Group, publishers of the Finder newspaper.
The others are Albert Ocran, an international motivational speaker, author and co-founder of Combert Impressions; and Dr. Doris Yaa Dartey, a communications professional and chairperson of the board of directors of the Graphic Communications Group Limited.
Meanwhile in the ninth episode this weekend, Ernest Ankomah, a full time philanthropist helps improve literacy in rural communities by establishing libraries to give the youth access to reading materials and a convenient place to study.
He has succeeded in providing over 70 small libraries in different communities around the country. His efforts are mainly centred in the Volta Region
Johngay Akortia, a professional teacher who is currently an inmate of the Nsawam prison has dedicated himself to giving fellow inmates a chance to an education by running a school within the prison and giving lessons free of charge.
The MTN Heroes of Change is shown on Sundays on Crystal TV (7.30 pm); Metro TV (8.00 pm); Multi TV (8.00 pm); eTV Ghana (8.00 pm) and TV Africa (8.30 pm).
