The Ghana Music Week has been rebranded as GMW Festival ahead of this year’s week-long celebration starting on March 3.

Musiga President, Bice Osei Kuffuor, in speech at the media launch of the festival at Alisa Hotel revealed;

“The Ghana Music Week Festival has been rechristened to GMW Festival because some members of the union who were involved to work on the Ghana Music Week 2013 event went to the Registrar General’s Department and registered Ghana Music Week as their brand and company.

“It’s sad but we know that no single individual or musician is bigger than the Ghana Music Week that was created for the music industry.”

“We at the Musicians Union of Ghana believe strongly as a union it’s not a name that carries an event but really the activities that happen. So much as the union is not interested in any form of litigation or what so ever. The national executive committee decided for the name GMW Festival – A Week Long Celebration of Ghana Music; for this year’s music celebration,” he adds.

His comments preempted what has now become a tussle over the usage of the event’s name. Fenec Okyere of Kwaw Kese’s Madtime Entertainment, is claiming ownership.
