For firebrand dancehall singer Shatta Wale, the 2019 3Music Awards (held yesterday March 30 at the Fantasy Dome in Accra) will sit up there among his most fulfilling award nights in his eventful career, after sweeping eight plaques–including the coveted “Music Man of the Year” award.

Born Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jnr., the singer/ producer was also the opening act for the ceremony. He picked up laurels in the categories of “Viral Song of the Year,””Reggae/Dancehall Song of the Year,” “Digital Act of the Year,” “Reggae/ Dancehall Act of the Year,” “Fan Army of the Year,” “Video of the Year,” and Song of the Year.”

Fellow dancehall practitioner, Stonebwoy was named “Most Streamed Artist on Boomplay,” as well as recipient of “Afrobeats Song of the Year,” and “Boomplay Album of the Year” for Epistles of Mama.

Other winners on the night include the Bethel Revival Choir for “Gospel Song of the Year,” Kofi Mole for “Next Rated Act of the Year,” “Wendy Shay for “Breakthrough Act of the Year,” Rocky Dawuni for “Best Ghanaian International Act,” and DJ Vyrusky for “DJ of the Year.”

There were also honourary awards for highlife doyen, Obuoba J.A. Adofo, and music producer Mark Okraku Mantey.

The night’s performances came from Kofi Mole, Wendy Shay, The Bethel Revival Choir, MEDiKAL, Cina Soul, Tulenkey, Eddie Khae, Rocky Dawuni, Akwaboah, Adina, Tee Phlow and a number of others.

Broadcasters Lexis Bill and Cookie were co-hosts for the evening.

While organisers were hailed  for a creditable scheme, they have come under criticism for tarrying with the commencement of the show. The show started around 11pm, four hours later than the advertised time of 7pm. This led to the event dragging several hours into the morning of Sunday, March 31.
