The world is mourning the passing of former UN Secretary and Nobel laureate, Kofi Annan, who “passed away peacefully on Saturday after a short illness,” according to a statement by the Kofi Annan Foundation, confirming the news.

Aged 80, Annan was a beloved global diplomat, and served as UN Chief from 1997 to 2006.

The statement also described Annan as a “global statesman and deeply committed internationalist who fought throughout his life for a fairer and more peaceful world”.
