To support his new album, The Autobiography, Vic Mensa took to The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Monday for a class-act performance of We Could Be Free.

The performance read like a sign of the times with Mensa flanked by a string quartet and choir sporting all-black outfits emblazoned with societal ills which have become the norm in America: police brutality, sexual violence, poverty, among others.

The Autobiography arrived in July after much anticipation for Mensa’s debut album following two EPs and a mixtape.

Mensa has been honing his live performance skills of late by opening for Jay Z on his 4:44 Tour. Watch his We Could Be Free performance below.
