Kumasi-based Prempeh College has beaten off fierce competition from St. Thomas Aquinas SHS and Adisadel College at this year’s edition of the National Science and Maths Quiz. It brings to four, the total number of times they have lifted the enviable trophy, just one shy of PRESEC- Legon.

This year’s edition, held at the National Theatre, is also the biggest since its inception in 1993. Until the very last riddle, it was unclear who would emerge champion, but a 2- point lead over Aquinas was all it took for them to annex the prestigious trophy.

Defending champions Adisadel College were reduced to third position, managing a mere 31 points.

Tamale SHS’ Zuweira Baba Mohammed was awarded the Prof. Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu award for the best female contestant, winning a cash prize of GHC5,000.  The Prof. Ewurama Addy award for the most outstanding team went to Tamale SHS, and Nifa SHS also waked away with a special award for the most successful team.

An all-boys boarding school in a suburb of Kumasi, Ashanti, Ghana, it was founded in 1949 by the Asantehene Sir Osei Tutu Agyeman Prempeh II.  Notable alumni from the Prempeh College include former president of Ghana John Kuffour, Dr. Kwabena Duffour (former Minister of Finace & governor of the Bank of Ghana), Prof. Kwadwo Asenso Okyere (former Vice Chancellor, University of Ghana, Legon, former head of Food and Agricultulture, UNO), and Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (MP for Manhyia South and Minister for Education).
