The 2017 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards is currently ongoing at the Accra International Conference Centre.
It is hosted by Starr FM’s Anita Erskine, with support from DJ Black on the decks. Sammy Amed was awarded Traditional Artist of the Year, the first award for the night – Traditional Artist of the Year. Patch Bay’s Philip Acquah also picked up the award for Instrumentalist of the Year.
The Vodafone Lifetime Achievement Award went the way of veteran highlife singer Paapa Yankson. Mr. Yankson, 72, has turned in some 15 albums, sung in that deeply moving tenor through which he has mirrored various aspects of our lives. He is co-founder of the famous Western Diamonds Band, and such songs as Yaaba, Wiase Mu Nsem, Show Your Love, Wo Yere Anaa Wo Maame, and Tena Menkyen; his lovely duet with Paulina Oduro, have endeared multitudes to him through all these years.
VGMA 2017 is a Charterhouse Ghana production. It is sponsored by telecoms giant Vodafone. EL, Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, Joe Mettle, MzVee, Medikal are all in the running for the coveted award of Artist of the Year.
