Tema-based duo R2Bees have been nominated at this year’s MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs).
They made the cut alongside Micasa, Toofan, Sauti Sol and Navy Kenzo.
The Viacom-owned scheme returns this year on October 22 at the Ticketpro Dome, Johannesburg.
A successful venture of years of solid standing, it was revived in 2014 after a three-year break and retooled to broaden its appeal beyond an African audience. In 2014 and 2015, it was held in Durban, South Africa.
This year’s will be hosted by celebrated South African Comedian Trevor Noah and will feature performances from Alikiba, Babes Woduma, Cassper Nyovest, Nasty C, Ycee and Yemi Alade.
The MTV Africa Music Awards 2016 will air live across Africa on multi-platform network MTV Base and MTV in Africa as well as globally on partner stations and content platforms. MTV channels around the world will be airing a one-hour MAMA-themed edition of MTV World Stage, Viacom says.
Started in 2008, it was conceived by MTV and Nigeria’s Alex Okosi, responsible for Viacom’s growth in Africa.
The MAMAs seeks to recognise and reward musicians and achievers who have made the most impact on African music and youth culture.
