The first edition of The Golden Movie Awards – Africa has been launched. It is an event that seeks to honor individuals in the African movie industry who have impacted and excelled greatly in the movie under the year in review, which is January 1st to December 31st, 2014.

Organizers say the intention behind the awards scheme is “to set a credible continental standard of excellence by which the best actors in the movie industry of Africa may attain international acclaim through national recognition.”

The event will bring together more than 1,500 key film professional, craftspeople and decision makers from across Africa to honor, celebrate and promote the Africa film industry. It will also, focus on building stakeholders of the film industry through development programs.

Every year, a faculty made up of 21 members will select/nominate and shortlist 10 people, who will further be shortlisted to 5b people by the grand jury.

Award winners on the night will work together on a movie with the best production house winner, aimed at educating the public about HIV/AIDS in collaboration with the UNAIDS.

Dr. Girmay Haile, Country Director of UNAIDS Ghana, commended the organizers for putting together the award scheme with the intent of sensitizing the public about HIV/AIDS.

The theme of this year’s event is “Build your goal and protect your goal.” Nominations are opened to owners of movies or their authorized representative starting February 12 to April 12, 2015.

The Golden Movie Awards – Africa has 38 categories, and is powered by NMJ Ghana.
