Staff at the Thomson Foundation were saddened to learn about the death of the BBC journalist and presenter Komla Dumor over the weekend.

A presenter on BBC World News and the channel’s Focus on Africa programme, Komla trained at the Thomson Foundation on the Spring Reporting Workshop of 2004.

At the time he was one of Ghana’s best known journalists and had won the Ghana Journalist of the Year award the previous year.

In 2007 he joined the BBC as a radio broadcaster before becoming a familiar face on BBC World.

Shortly after he arrived in the UK, Komla contacted the foundation with an update on his career progression.

He recalled having “a great time” while training at the foundation’s former base in Cardiff and said he had fond memories of his trainers, particularly course lecturer Mike Pierson (pictured left).

Our thoughts are with Komla’s family, friends and colleagues.
